The Whitings and Fearings of Liberty Plain

A short walk through two South Hingham families joined, in one generation, by marriage. Four of the Fearing daughters of Liberty Plain married Whiting men, and the families are gathered now in this ground. Six stones, a quarter mile, perhaps twenty minutes. The directions are provisional until each grave is confirmed on-site; for now, let the family lead you.

Each faint mark is a grave whose location is actually recorded (376 of them). The cemetery's fields are labelled only where the records place them; section boundaries are not surveyed. The numbered walk stops are approximate, those graves have no recorded coordinates yet.
  1. 1 Solomon Whiting 1724–1813 Enter from the High Street gate. Begin with the oldest Whiton stone here, Solomon, the town blacksmith, who lived to eighty-eight. He shares the family's name but not its near line; think of him as the deep root the others grew far from.
  2. 2 Albert Whiting 1810–1891 Walk in toward the Whiting field. Here lies Albert Whiting, the master mason of Liberty Plain, the man the memorial chapel remembers. The family proper begins with him.
  3. 3 Amasa Whiting 1821–1883 Nearby rests Albert's first cousin, Amasa, who married into the very same family Albert did.
  4. 4 Hannah Lincoln Fearing Whiting 1825–1910 Beside Amasa, his wife, Hannah Lincoln Fearing, one of four sisters who married Whiting men.
  5. 5 Sarah Henrietta Whiting Caryl 1849–1929 Bear toward the Caryl lot. Here is Albert's daughter, Sarah Henrietta, buried under her married name.
  6. 6 Albert Whiting Caryl 1871–1872 At her feet, the smallest stone of the walk, her infant son, named for his grandfather. End here, quietly.
